Athens/Clarke County Community Chest was incorporated February 24th, 1954. There were 8 agencies supported by the campaign: YMCA, YWCA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cancer Society, Heart Association, Salvation Army and the Defense Fund.
On July 21st, 1980 the name was changed to United Way of Northeast Georgia, Inc., adding 6 counties: Barrow, Franklin, Jackson, Madison, Oglethorpe and Oconee.
The United Way of Northeast Georgia currently supports 29 human service agencies in an eight county area that includes: Barrow, Clarke, Franklin, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, Oglethorpe and Oconee.
United Way of Northeast Georgia is locally managed by a volunteer Board of Directors, and is one of over 1,300 local United Ways in the United States.
The Mission of the United Way of Northeast Georgia is to increase the ability of people to care for one another through the combined efforts of volunteers and service providers, and to be an effective catalyst in a community-wide effort to provide a quality of life for all.
