We would like to send a huge THANK YOU to the Jackson EMC Foundation for providing Success by 6 with a grant of $14,867 to continue our program of providing a Critical Years Critical Needs Parenting Manual and a Board Book to all new parents having babies at Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary's Hospital through the Welcome Baby boxes. Your continuing support is greatly appreciated!

Success By 6

Success By 6 is an initiative of the United Way of Northeast Georgia.

United Way Success by 6™ envisions a community in which all children are healthy,

secure and prepared to learn when they enter kindergarten. Our outreach efforts

concentrate on three areas: Educating Parents, Assisting Families and Improving Early

Learning. Success by 6™ partners with the Dolly Parton Foundation's Imagination

Library to create the “Wee Read” program in Clarke and Oconee Counties.

Research has demonstrated this program improves early learning through early literacy.

Each registered child under 5 years of age receives one free, age appropriate book in the

mail each month. Included in the back flap of each Wee Read book are reading activities

endorsed by the United Way for parents to use.

In 2011 Wee Read received an Impact Award from the Clarke County School District “for lasting and significant contributions to the students of the Clarke County School District.” The “Critical Years, Critical Needs” parenting manual, a resource of the National Born Learning Program, is distributed to all parents who have a baby in one of Athens’ hospitals and is one of the primary methods of educating parents. The parenting manual, along with a baby's first board book were distributed to each newborn family through Welcome Baby thanks to a grant from Jackson EMC Operation Round Up. The “Kindergarten” readiness brochure, created through a study of local kindergarten teachers, was distributed to all parents of incoming kindergarten students in area school systems.

Vision Statement

All children are healthy, secure and prepared to learn when they enter school.

Mission Statement

All children will be prepared to learn through the collaborative effort of every sector of our community – including parents, families, healthcare, behavioral health, social services, business, education, government, child advocates, voluntary organizations, foundations, and the faith community.

Desired Outcome

All students in Barrow, Clarke, Franklin, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Franklin, and Stephens counties will demonstrate readiness for school upon initial entrance into kindergarten.

* Promote early childhood literacy in all counties.

* Determine an initial baseline for school readiness in each county.

* Lead the community in awareness of the importance of helping our children succeed in school.

* Conduct regular reassessments of the school readiness data in each county to evaluate overall effectiveness of SB6

* Perform community outreach and build partnerships to make an impact on the lives of children in our communities.
